So - I was at least right about 2 out of 4. I was really suprised to see Becky go - although it would have happened soon. I really expected to say goodbye to Kevin and Kinnik. I remember Patrick and Heather now - they would have been on my "to go" list.
Until next week...

Bible in a Year
I found a great resource the other day and wanted to share it with you. Christianity.com has a section of their website with daily Bible readings so that you can read through the Bible in a year. You can even choose the translation and track your progress. I've signed up and am almost through my first week of readings. I'm really enjoying it - it's so very cool to be able to track my progress. The only thing that would make it even cooler is if they had some sort of journal capability to be tied to each day - maybe someday my programming husband will come up with a program that has that capability.
In the meantime, join me in reading through the Bible in a year...here's the link

Idol Picks
I know it's silly - and you're probably going to make fun of me - but I'm loving the new season of American Idol. Somehow I got hooked this time. You may not believe it - but I haven't watched the show at all since the first season. I'm a huge Kelly Clarkson fan - and thought that the talent hasn't compared since. BUT - I think this season is different. I think there are several stars in the making this season...so here are my pics after watching the performances these last 2 days:
Boys:
Who I DIDN'T like:
Bobby Bennett - I think he is the worst performer of all the boys and girls. Cool guy - interesting personality - but not an American Idol in my opinion.
Sway - I really don't like his style - but I think lots of other people will and so he probably won't be going home tonight.
Kevin Covais - I love this kid. Maybe in a few years he'll be ready for the competition, but right now he's just not as good as the rest.
Taylor Hicks - I love this guy too! He's really interesting and real and passionate, but I don't understand why the judges all thought his performance was good - I really thought he was the worst singer of the entire group. But since everyone else likes him so much - and because he is so funny - he will probably make it to the next round.
These guys are my 3 favorites - by far!:
Elliott Yamin - It's weird how often I agreed with Simon last night on the boys - this guy was the best of the bunch. He has an awesome voice, picked a great song, and definitely is likable. He'll make it to the very end - or at least he should!
Ace Young - Great voice, great presence, great performer - cool guy. This guy will also make it to the end!
Chris Daughtry - I loved this guy - and not just because he sang Bon Jovi :) He's got one of the best voices - and is definitely a great performer.
I also liked Bucky (the cowboy), Will Makar (he looks an awful lot like John Mayer in my opinion - I really like this guy) and David Radford (the crooner). I didn't like Gedeon (his smile bugged me too), but have to admit that he has a good voice - and will probably not go home tonight. I honestly don't remember Patrick. I don't remember him being bad, but obviously he was forgettable for me.
Okay, for the girls:
Fav's:
Katherine McPhee - LOVED her voice. She reminds me of Kelly Clarkson, but with more training - she has incredible potential. I think she might walk away with the whole competition - or at least make it to the very end.
Paris Bennett - This girl has TALENT!!! Not only is her voice unique and beautiful - she is the best performer of the girls. People are going to love her!
Lisa Tucker - I actually thought her voice was better than Paris - and she has the potential to be even better. I loved the uniqueness of her voice - cool chick!
Who I would vote off:
Stevie Scott - didn't like her style. She missed ALOT of notes. Don't think she'll make through tonight's elimination.
Kinnik Sky - she looked awesome. But her voice didn't match. Too many wrong notes, and not enough talent. I think she'll go tonight too.
Melissa McGhee - I don't remember much about her performance other than the fact that I didn't like it. She'll probably make it through tonight though - I think.
I DID like:
Kellie Pickler - I love this girl. She is not the best singer or performer, but has potential to be much better than we've seen so far. She won't win, but I really hope she does well.
Ayla Brown - weird song choice. Didn't show off her talent in my opinion. You could tell she has a great voice. I want to see what else she can do.
Mandisa - I like her style, her voice and her passion. She's not the best singer in the competition, but she's really good.
I DIDN"T like:
Brenna Gethers - She has a good voice. But her song last night was terrible. I don't like her attitude - and I think that affects my opinion of her voice a little. I don't think she'll make it too far, though - b/c I think America will get tired of her too.
Becky Donahue - she hit some wrong notes, but I liked the choice of song, and think she has great potential as a performer. She doesn't have the best vocal quality - her style is cool, though. I really don't know how far she'll get.
I don't remember Heather Cox at all either - not at all.
Bottom line:
I think that Kevin Covais and Bobby Bennett are the boys going home, and that Stevie Scott and Kinik Sky will be the girls that leave.

Compass Happenings
There is a new blog in town!!!
Compass Church has just launched a new blog! It's where you'll find all the information you need about what is going on at Compass. We're using it as a sort of online newsletter, with announcements, updates, and even sermon "extras". Check it out here.
Sunday was great, by the way! It is so awesome to be in the Roanoke Recreation Center! We were able to experiment with the lighting this week and it made a HUGE difference. We also were able to get setup in less time than previous weeks - yeah!!
I couldn't be more certain that this is exactly where we're supposed to be - and that's a wonderful feeling! There still are (and I'm sure always will be) a few kinks to work out, a few areas where we could improve - but all in all - I think we really have something here. Something worth throwing the weight of my life behind - something to really get excited and serious about. The potential has been there all along - but I think we're really becoming more than ever before what God has planned for this area at this time.
God has been faithful to us - to lead us to this place. Now we are excited to have the opportunity to be faithful to what He has called us to do - to His vision for our lives and for our church! What a privilege to be able to be a part of God's plan - to be able to see Him do incredible things. I can't wait for what He has in store for Compass Church!
Ephesians 3:20-21:
20Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. 21May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages.

CD Reviews
Guess what CD I got last night?!?! I'll give you a hint - he was the blonde contestant on Rock Star INXS...still don't know? Well, my husband suprised me last night with the "Marty Casey and Love Hammers" CD. IT ROCKS!!
Not just because I now get to hear "Trees" whenever I want to - but because he is a really great songwriter - and the music is just awesome!! I haven't been this excited about a CD since I got the Bon Jovi CD w/ "It's My Life" on it (another song that really makes me happy!)
Here are a few other CDs I got lately:
Tree63: The Worship Album - this one is even better than I thought it would be...be expecting several of these songs to show up on Sunday mornings in the near future. Fav songs on this album: King, I Stand for You, Great Kindness, Lift, No Other
X Worship 2006 (various artists) - not as good as I'd hoped. I have a lot of these songs already. But I did find a song from Kutless ("Finding Who We Are") that I love and can't wait to share with Compass Church-goers. Fav songs: In the Burning (Something Like Silas), Finding Who We Are (Kutless)
Flyleaf (self-titled) - better than I expected. Also much heavier than I expected. I honestly haven't listened to this CD very much yet. Fav songs: Breathe Today, I'm So Sick
Telecast: Eternity is Now - It's ok, but not as good as their last album. I haven't listened to this CD much yet - but I'm sure I'll have my favorite songs picked from it within a week. It's not a heavy album - very mellow. Great lyrics, but the music bored me a little when I first listened to it. I'm sure it will grow on me, though. I really like this band!
Krystal Meyers: self-titled - I LOVE this CD. It has so many great hits on it. She rocks! Kind of along the lines of Kelly Clarkson or Superchick. Kind of pop, with a little rock mixed in. Fav songs: The Way to Begin, My Savior, Anticonformity (so far).

Countdown to the "Big Day"
Well, it's almost here...the "Big Day". I'll be 25 years old next Friday - and I can't wait!! I LOVE birthdays! I LOVE birthday parties! I LOVE friends and food and presents! Everybody does - not everyone admits it, though. My dad says I'll be a quarter of a century old - that actually sounds OLD. I'd like to say that I have some important wisdom for you - and maybe I could muster up a few small things - but mostly I still feel like there is SO much to discover and to learn. I feel like life is just beginning - and I LOVE it! I couldn't ask for a better life situation. I have an incredible husband, adorable daughter, the best family, and friends that I don't know what I would do without. Life is good ... and getting better all the time! Hopefully there is a party in my very near future...I'll keep you updated.

A Dose of Perspective
I read a post by Tally Wilgis just now that I couldn't keep from sharing with you. Check it out here. It's all about his observations during a visit to another church. The best part is at the end...
"Each week when Christians and Selfians collide... someone WILL BE uncomfortable. Why is it that the Christians want to make the Selfians uncomfortable? Why can't the Christians say "If someone has to be uncomfortable in this transaction, let it be us. I'm okay with letting my saved family do church in a theater with beer ads all around." The way those beer ads hit many church goers is the same way a stained glass window, a tie, or hymnals hits the Selfians. If I KNOW there will be SOMEONE uncomfortable... I want it to be our church members and attendees. Let it be me! If it will allow my selfian friend to see Christ in his own context... so be it."
Good stuff - right?

The Words We Use...
I posted awhile back about some of the reasons I believe Compass is different - check it out here.
I also read a post by Tony Morgan this morning that talked about the importance of choosing our words wisely when talking to people who are just discovering Christ and His church - check it out here.
I was reminded of the importance of what we're doing at Compass Church.
There are so many people in the Alliance, TX area, and Roanoke in particular, that are in need of a church that will introduce them to Christ in a way that they can understand.
When missionaries visit foreign countries to introduce Christ to people who've never heard of Him before, they always go prepared to speak the language of the people they're trying to reach. It just makes sense. Of course, as Tony mentioned, they don't water-down the Message - they simply put it into terms that the people there will understand.
That's what we want to do. We want to remove all the barriers between the people we're trying to reach, and the One we're following. We want to give them an opportunity to clearly and easily see the love of the Savior - and what that can mean to them.
That's it. That's what it's about - Loving people like Jesus loved people so that maybe, through us, they will see Jesus - and finally understand who He really is. Everything we do is tied to that.

Christmas Songs
I've been putting together a list of must-play Christmas songs for our Christmas Eve Service. I'm also working on a few originals to see if I can bring some modern to mesh with the old.
I read a blog today that talks about the 'retro' and 'overplay' issues with Christmas music in the church. Check it out here.
What do you think? What are the must-play Christmas songs? How do you feel about the 'retro' feel?

How many blogs do you subscribe to?
Me, I'm up to an embarrasing 38 Feeds and I found 2 more today that I will add.
Maybe I need to seek professional help.

I'm a Blog Junkie
I haven't had much time for blogging lately - or for reading my bloglines. I've missed it so! It's like a tiny little conference on my computer. The only down side is that I have no idea what these people look like.
I was defending my blog habit to my sister (who thinks I'm crazy), and have decided that I don't have to defend myself. It's my party and I'll blog if I want to.
And so should you...so, blog on.

The Importance of Journaling
I pulled out my old journals last night. Before I get started in what I want to tell you I need to make sure you understand what a journal is to me. It is more of a prayer journal than anything else. It's a record of my walk with God and journey through life - acknowledging where God is, what He's doing and what it has to do with me.
The first one I looked at I had actually started a few days before I met Ricky (my husband). It was so interesting to see what I had been learning and thinking during that time and how much it spoke to my situation. I then read through the journal that I kept during the time that I was pregnant with my daughter. Then the one that I started right after she was born. Good stuff. Emotional stuff.
The one that I most enjoyed, though was the one that I kept during the time that my husband was diagnosed with leukemia. He has been in remission now for 5 years, so no need to be concerned. I am only sharing this because I noticed something in that journal that was different from the other journals. In that journal, I wrote every day. Sometimes multiple times per day. I wrote longer entries than in the other journals and I acknowledged and praised God more often. I noticed that during that incredibly difficult and depressing time - I noticed God more often than during the wonderful times in my life (meeting the love of my life - and preparing for the birth of our daughter). I knew God better during that time - obviously because I talked to Him more often. I made time for God because He was the only stable, solid and good thing in my life at that point.
This is the stuff that James was talking about in James 1 - (consider it pure joy whenever you face trials). It is during these trials that we find out more about God than the surface level stuff. We get to experience for ourselves the love of the Father - the comfort and the strength that He gives. That's why journaling is so important. Last night I was taken back to that time - through my own eyes. I remembered the emptiness I felt and the way God filled it with His love. It was like reliving the experience - but most of what I wrote focused on God - and not on me. It was like drawing closer to Him all over again.
Journaling is important - it helps us to remember the ways God has provided - it helps us to not make the same mistakes we did back then - to look forward and to be different - to be better.
Go find a journal and get started - I'll do the same.

Contingency Plan
I read a post today that I found to be terribly convicting. Check it out here.
I wonder what contingency plans I am holding on to. Something to think about.

What are you afraid of?
We started a new life group last night. It is called "KNOW FEAR" and was written by Ed Young. I'm really excited about it. I didn't realize I had so many fears. Next week we're talking about Fear of the Future. We even played a little "Name that Fear" game last night. Here are a few of them - see if you can identify them (and no cheating allowed!):
Gamophobia
Ecclesiophobia
Pentheraphobia
Aviophobia
Venustraphobia
Blennophobia
I'll post the answers on Monday.

Comments
Several people have told me lately that they have been unable to leave comments on my blog. I have discovered (thanks to Johnny) that one of my settings was off. Somewhere along the way I set it so that only members of this blog can leave comments. But I'm the only member of this blog. Since I don't ever really feel the need to comment on myself, I have fixed the issue and now anyone should be able to comment.
So, comment away. In fact, somebody should test it. Anybody?

Practical Worship
I read an article today by Rick Warren on the Purpose Driven website about 4 characteristics of worship. You can read the article here.
Basically, Rick said that there are 4 characteristics of God-pleasing worship:
It is Accurate - based on the truth of Scripture and reflecting who God really is (not just who we think He is or want Him to be).
It is Authentic - 1 Samuel 16:7b "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
It is Thoughtful - "If worship is mindless, it's meaningless...You must engage your mind."
It is Practical - God asks us to give Him what we have. He doesn't require more of us than we can give.
The last one reminded me of something we talked about on Sunday. We were studying the story of the widow who's husband left her deep in debt and her debtors were threatening to take her children as slaves to pay back the debt. She went to Elisha and asked for help. The first thing he said to her was "What do you have?" All she had was a small bottle of olive oil. He asked her to gather as many bowls or pots as she could from her neighbors and family. Then he told her to pour the olive oil into the bowls - there was enough from that small bottle of olive oil to fill all the bowls she had gathered.
The part of this story that I was reminded of today is where he first asked her "What do you have?" When we come to God wanting to serve and worship Him, but feeling that we are not equipped to serve Him. He first asks us - "What do you have?" then shows us how to use what we already have to serve Him. It doesn't matter if we're not good at speaking (think Moses) or if we have a terrible past (think Paul). Everyone is usable by God. God wants practical worship - he doesn't want you to try to be something you're not. Who you are is exactly who He intended for you to be.
What do you have? What can you do? What are you good at? Start there. God will do the rest.

Leave of Absence
I have been working extremely hard at work lately and have had absolutely no time for blogging - or anything else for that matter. I have also recently made the decision to change jobs, which means I will be working even harder trying to wrap up all the projects I've been working on before I leave. All this to say that I will probably not be blogging over the next few weeks. Big suprise, I know, because my blogs have been so frequent over the last month. :)
I am hoping that with the new job will come a little breathing room and a little more time for blogging. In the meantime, keep checking Johnny's blog and our church website @ www.compasswired.com to keep up to date on what is going on in the Compassphere.
Happy Friday, by the way!

Fear and the Absence of Blog
It's been almost 2 weeks since my last blog (sounds kind of like a confession, huh?). I've been so busy with work and church and other stuff that I haven't had much time to do anything else - like blogging.
I got the new Switchfoot CD - it's pretty good (not as good as the last one - but still good) and the new Audio Adrenaline CD - it's even better! I still need to get the new David Crowder Band CD - it will be the best of the 3 - I'm pretty sure.
I'm reading Ed Young's book, Know Fear - and it rocks! I didn't know I was so afraid until I started reading his book. We're going to start a small group study based on the book - which I'm very excited about. It always amazes me how many things I am afraid of. I hate horror movies just for that reason. As if I don't have enough to be scared about - they have to invent a whole new scenario to freak me out! I'm realizing that it is all in my head. It's a tool used to keep me from believing and trusting in God. When I'm afraid, I'm basically saying that my God is too small. I don't want that to be me anymore! I know who my God is and what He is capable of - now I need to remember to remind my brain of those things. Sounds simple - but it's not. It's hard to trust. I will take it one day at a time - and hopefully someday it will be a little easier.
